Planning a display on a short timeline
When the lights need to go up soon, the fewer separate pieces an order has, the fewer things can go wrong. A few ways to keep it simple:
Start from a kit
C9 installation kits combine socket wire, LED bulbs, plugs and clips sized to a footage: 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 ft. Measure the rooflines, add the lengths and pick the next size up.
Choose spacing once
12 in. spacing puts a bulb every foot for a solid line; 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs over the same footage. Choose one spacing for the whole house so every run looks the same.
Add trees with mini strands
LED mini strands carry 50 lights and connect end to end. Plan about 100 lights per foot of tree height for a medium wrap. 24-strand cases keep every tree in one color.
Match the mount to the surface
All-in-one clips cover shingles and gutters. Ridge clips go on the peaks. Magnet clips hold to metal. Order one clip per socket plus a few spares.
Before the lights arrive
Map the outlets the display will draw from and plan which runs connect to which. Check that outdoor outlets are GFCI-protected. Set the photocell timer's on-hours before mounting so the display switches on at dusk from the first night.

From order to lit: a short-timeline plan
Orders ship the same day they're placed, so the lights are already moving through the carrier network the next day. With transit time from there depending on distance, here's how to use the days before they arrive so install day goes quickly.
Day you order
- Measure every roofline edge you're lighting and total the footage.
- Pick one spacing (12 in. for a solid line, 15 in. to use about 20% fewer bulbs).
- Choose the kit at or just above your footage, plus a photocell timer ($11).
- Order mini strands for any trees or shrubs.
While the order is in transit
- Find and test every outdoor outlet you'll use; confirm each is GFCI-protected.
- Note which outlets share a breaker so you don't overload one circuit.
- Clean gutters where the clips will go; clips seat better on clean edges.
- Plan each run: where it starts, where it ends, and which outlet powers it.
Delivery day
- Open the box and check the contents against the order before climbing a ladder.
- Lay each run out on the ground under its edge and plug it in to test before mounting.
Which kit fits your house
- 250 ft. — a small single-story front. 12 in. spacing, $435 · 15 in. spacing, $425
- 500 ft. — a full single-story or small two-story. 12 in. spacing, $935 · 15 in. spacing, $823.12
- 1,000 ft. — a large two-story or a home plus garage and outbuildings. 12 in. spacing, $1,605.10 · 15 in. spacing, $1,299
Kits include socket wire, LED C9 bulbs to fill every socket, male and female plugs, and clips. Larger 2,000 and 4,000 ft. kits are listed in the kit collection for commercial buildings and large properties.
Install-day sequence
- Start at the outlet. Mount the first run from the end nearest its power source so the male plug reaches the outlet or timer.
- Clip every socket. Slide each socket into a clip, then clip it to the shingle or gutter. Consistent clip placement keeps the bulbs upright and evenly spaced.
- Cut at the end of the edge. Cut the wire between sockets and install a female plug so the next run can connect, or a cap-end plug to finish.
- Work edge by edge. Finish one edge completely, test it, then move to the next.
- Bulbs last, or first. Either install bulbs on the ground before mounting (fewer trips up the ladder) or after (less weight on the run while clipping). Both work; don't mix approaches mid-run.
- Set the timer. Program the on-hours before plugging in, and face the photocell toward open sky.
Trees, shrubs and walkways
LED mini strands carry 50 lights and connect end to end. For shrubs, plan about one strand per 2 ft. by 2 ft. of surface. For trees, about 100 lights per foot of height for a medium wrap. For walkways, 8 in. light stakes hold C9 bulbs on socket wire along the path.
Keeping it simple on a deadline
The fastest displays use one color, one spacing and one bulb style across the whole house. Every added color or pattern is another decision on install day. Start with the roofline, add a tree or two, and expand next year once the base display is up.
Questions
If I order today, when do the lights ship?
Today. Orders ship the same day they're placed, so they're in transit by the next day. The delivery estimate at checkout comes from the carrier.
What can I do before my lights arrive?
Measure and plan each run, test every outdoor outlet you'll use, confirm they're GFCI-protected, and clean the gutters where clips will go. That way install day is only mounting and testing.
Which kit size do I need?
Total the footage of every edge you're lighting and choose the kit at or just above it: 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 ft. The pricing table above lists each kit's cost per foot.
Should I put the bulbs in before or after mounting?
Either works. Installing bulbs on the ground means fewer ladder trips; installing after mounting keeps the run lighter while you clip it. Pick one approach per run.
How long does a roofline install take?
It depends on the footage and the roof. Laying out and testing each run on the ground first, then mounting edge by edge, is the fastest approach for a first-time install.
Can I add trees and shrubs later?
Yes. LED mini strands connect end to end and can be added any time. Plan about 100 lights per foot of tree height for a medium wrap.
When will my order ship?
The same day it's placed, so it's in transit by the next day. The delivery estimate at checkout comes from the carrier.
What should I order if I'm short on time?
Start with a C9 installation kit sized to your total roofline footage, then add mini light strands for trees and a photocell timer.
What's the difference between C9 and C7 bulbs?
C9 bulbs are the larger of the two, about 1⅛ in. across on an E17 intermediate base, and are the standard for rooflines and commercial displays viewed from the street. C7 bulbs are smaller, on an E12 candelabra base, and suit close-viewed spaces like porches, railings and walkways.
How many bulbs do I need for a roofline?
Convert the run length to inches and divide by the socket spacing. A 100 ft. roofline is 1,200 in.; at 12 in. spacing that's 100 sockets and 100 bulbs, and at 15 in. spacing it's 80.
Should I choose 12 in. or 15 in. spacing?
12 in. spacing gives a tighter, brighter line and is common on single-story homes and anything viewed up close. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs for the same footage and is common on larger homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance.
What's in a C9 installation kit?
Kits combine C9 socket wire at the listed length and spacing with LED C9 bulbs to fill the sockets, slide-on plugs to finish the runs and clips to mount them. The options list on each kit shows the bulb colors and clip mix available.
Which clip do I need?
All-in-one clips fit shingles and gutters. Ridge clips mount along roof peaks. Tile and extended fascia clips are for tile roofs and deep fascia boards. Magnet clips hold to metal surfaces, and light stakes place C9 or C7 bulbs along walkways and beds.
What are sun warm, warm, pure and cool white?
They describe color temperature. Sun warm white (about 2600–2800K) is the most amber, closest to incandescent. Warm white (about 2800–3200K) is the traditional soft white. Pure white (about 4000–4200K) is neutral, and cool white (5900K and up) has a blue tint.
